Madhubala Early Life

Madhubala was born on 14th February 1933 in Delhi, British India (present-day in India).

Her real name was Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi and she was the fifth of eleven children of her parents.

Her father and mother name was Ataullah Khan and Aayesha Begum.

She had a total of ten siblings from which only four survived to adulthood.

Her father was related to the Yousafzai tribe of Pashtuns and lived in Peshawar valley which is the present-day regions of Mardan and Swabi, now this place is in Pakistan, After losing his job at the Imperial Tobacco Company in Peshawar, he moved to Delhi with the whole family and then Bombay. The family endured many hardships from their time.

Madhubala’s three sisters and two brothers died at a very younger age of only five and six. On 14th April 1944, the dock explosion and fire wiped out their small home. Her family survived because they had gone to see a movie at a local theatre near to them.

With his six remaining daughters to provide for, Khan, and the young Madhubala start to pay frequent visits to Bombay film studios to earn money. At the age of only 9, She started her career in the film industry, which would provide financial help to her family and siblings.

Madhubala was able to spoke her native language Pashto at home and was an expert in Urdu and Hindi. But She couldn’t speak a word of English but always try to work on it. Madhubala also took classes in English and became fluent. After that, She learned driving while she was twelve years old. and sometimes enjoyed a long drive.

Madhubala Biography

Madhubala was a well known Indian film actress, film producer, and playback singer who worked in many Hindi-language films.

She was one of the most popular highest-paid actresses of her time, she worked in more than 73 Bollywood films in a successful career over two decades.

Among the media, she was the most beautiful, greatest, and influential personalities of Indian cinema.

Madhubala started her career by playing the role of a juvenile in the early 1940s, her first movie was  Basant (1942). At the age of only 14, she began working in lead roles with the 1947 drama movie Neel Kamal.

She worked in the thriller movie Mahal in the year 1949. After that, she worked as a social worker in the movie Amar in the year 1954, a modern miss in Mr. & Mrs. ’55 (1955), a cabaret dancer in Howrah Bridge (1958), and two sisters with contrasting personalities in Kal Hamara Hai in the year 1959, the romantic musical Barsaat Ki Raat and the magnum opus Mughal-e-Azam (both in 1960).

Her performance in Mughal-e-Azam was widely appreciated by critics. For this movie, she was only nominated for Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Some commercial successes of Madhubala were such as Passport (1961), Jhumroo (1961),  and Half Ticket (1962),  Her last completed movie was the posthumously released Jwala in the year 1971.
