Mohammed Rafi Early life

Mohammed Rafi was born on 24 December 1924  He is the second eldest of six brothers. His father’s name is Haji Ali Mohammad. His family mainly belonged to Kotla Sultan Singh which is a village near present-day Majitha in the Amritsar district of Punjab, India. His nickname was Pheeko, Rafi began singing by imitating the chants of a fakir who roamed the streets of his village Kotla Sultan Singh. In 1935, His father moved to Lahore, where he ran a men’s haircutting salon – in Noor Mohalla in Bhati Gate to make income. He learned classical music from Pandit Jiwan Lal Mattoo, Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan, and Firoze Nizami.

At the age of only 13, He gave his first public performance in Lahore featuring K. L. Saigal. In the year 1941, under music director Shyam Sundar, Rafi made his debut in Lahore as a playback singer in the duet song “Soniye Nee, Heeriye Nee” with Zeenat Begum in the Punjabi movie Gul Baloch (which is released in 1944). In that same year, He was invited by All India Radio Lahore station to sing for them. He made his first Hindi movie debut in Gaon Ki Gori in the year 1945.

Mohammed Rafi was an Indian film playback singer and one of the greatest and most influential singers of the Indian subcontinent. He was notable among people for his versatility and range of voice.  his songs related to fast peppy, patriotic songs, sad songs, romantic songs, qawwalis to ghazals and bhajans to classical songs. He was well known for his quality of voice and style of lip-syncing the song on screen in the movie.

He received four Filmfare Awards and one National Film Award. In the year 1967, Rafi was honored with the Padma Shri award by the Government of India. In the year 2001, He was honored with the “Best Singer of the Millennium” title by Hero Honda and Stardust magazine specifically. In the year 2013, He was selected for the Greatest Voice in Hindi Cinema in the CNN-IBN’s poll.

He also recorded songs in more than a thousand Hindi movies and sang songs in many Indian languages as well as foreign languages, He was strongly in command of Hindi-Urdu and Punjabi.

He sang a song in many Indian languages such as – Bhojpuri, Odia, Punjabi, Bengali, Marathi, Sindhi, Konkani, Assamese, Telugu, Magahi, Kannada, Gujarati, Tamil, Maithili, etc. Apart from Indian languages, he also sang songs in many foreign languages, such as English, Arabic, Sinhala, Farsi or Persian, Creole, and Dutch respectively. Mohammed Rafi died on July 31, 1980, in Mumbai at the age of 55.
