Early Life

Shakuntala Devi was born on 4th November 1929 in Bangalore, Karnataka, India. She belongs to a Kannada Brahmin family. Her father’s name was C V Sundararajan Rao who worked as a trapeze artist, lion tamer, tightrope walker, and magician in a circus.

When she was only three years old, her father discovered that her daughter had an amazing ability to memorize numbers. She also worked in circus shows to help his father. When he was six years old, she demonstrated her arithmetic abilities at the University of Mysore without any formal education. In the year 1944, She moved to London with her father.

Biography

Shakuntala Devi was a well-known Indian mathematician, writer, and mental calculator, mainly known as the “Human-Computer”.

In the year 1982, Her name was also listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for her outstanding talent. Although, the certificate for these records was given after her death on 30 July 2020, before that She achieving her world record on 18 June 1980 at Imperial College, London.

Shakuntala Devi tried to simplify all numerical calculations for students in the easiest way. In later years, She wrote a number of books, like novels and texts about mathematics, puzzles, and astrology. Devi also wrote the book named “The World of Homosexuals”, which is considered the first study of homosexuality in India.

on 18 June 1980 , Shakuntala Devi gained universal popularity when she demonstrated her ability to multiply two random numbers of 13 digits each. She could able to mentally multiply 7,686,369,774,870 × 2,465,099,745,779 and gave the correct answer 18,947,668,177,995,426,462,773,730 within just 28 seconds only.

Apart from that, she mentally calculated the cube roots of 95,443,993 (answer 457) in 2 seconds, of 204,336,469 (answer 589) in 5 seconds, and of 2,373,927,704 (answer 1334) in 10 seconds respectively.

Personal Life

After returning to India in the mid of 1960s, Shakuntala Devi got married to Paritosh Banerji, who was an officer of the Indian Administrative Service from Kolkata. but due to some personal issues, They divorced in the year 1979. She has a daughter named Anupama Banerji who got married to Ajay Abhaya Kumar. She lives in London with her two daughters.

About Death

In April 2013, Shakuntala Devi was admitted to a hospital in Bangalore with severe respiratory problems. Over the following two weeks, she suffered from heart and kidney complications.

on 21 April 2013, She died in the hospital. At the time of death, She was 83 years old. On 4 November 2013, She was honored by a Google Doodle on her 84th birth anniversary.

In May 2019, A film on her life was also made titled Shakuntala Devi which was Produced by Sony Pictures Networks Productions. The star cast of the movie is Vidya Balan in the lead role and features Sanya Malhotra, Amit Sadh, and Jisshu Sengupta.
