Superhero sequel Wonder Woman 1984 has grossed an estimated $ 38.5 million in ticket sales from international theaters, Warner Bros. said on Sunday. The film, starring Gal Gadot, made its rollout overseas last week, debuting in 32 markets including China, and playing over 30,000 screens. The studio said the total number of admissions is 6 million and is largely positive reviews which augur well for its future.
Most of the revenue came from Chinese cinemas, where it grossed an estimated $ 18.8 million. It was not enough to secure first place in the country, though – the honor went to a local release.
Wonder Woman 1984
Originally, Wonder Woman 1984 was scheduled to open in theaters worldwide this summer, but its release date kept pushing back. In 2017 the first film made over $ 821 million worldwide and it was expected that the sequel, which cost around $ 200 million, would also surpass the total.
Warner Bros. has tried to strategize a bit differently with its films this year, including releasing Tenet in theaters and sending The Witches directly to HBO Max. Finally last month the studio decided to embrace a hybrid release for Wonder Woman 1984
